Duolingo on TikTok: from 1.9M to 18.5M followers with an owl

November 8, 2026

Duolingo turned its owl mascot into a TikTok character, and its shareholder letters credit the account with growth on "basically zero marketing spend". We pulled the account today.

Median TikTok engagement11.6%

Background

The account took off in 2021. By December that year it had 1.9 million followers, run partly by a 23-year-old social media manager, Zaria Parvez source. Duolingo's Q4 2021 letter said the account "attracted nearly 3 million followers and over 500 million video views, all with basically zero marketing spend" source. In 2023 it reported nearly 3 billion social impressions, up 170% source, and in 2025 the "Dead Duo" stunt drew 1.7 billion organic impressions while the company "spent practically nothing" source.

Strategy

  • The mascot is the creator. Duo has a personality, and fans follow a character, not a logo.
  • Collabs with fandoms. Recent posts tag Taco Bell (6 times), Brawl Stars (5), and K-pop groups such as ATEEZ, LE SSERAFIM and NCT. The top TikTok in our sample, Duo with ATEEZ, drew 18.3M views.
  • Artists in the loop. One illustrator, tagged as @leah, appears in six recent posts, including the 8.3M-view dancing owl.

What stands out

Duolingo is the only brand in our set where the median TikTok gets close to a million views. Its median engagement of 11.6% is the highest of the ten brands, and saves run at 1.17% of views, also the highest. It posts most days (78 TikToks in 90 days) but does not need volume: the account averages 459,000 likes per post over its lifetime.

Lessons

  1. A character beats a catalog. People share jokes, not features.
  2. Borrow fandoms. Collabs with games, food brands and K-pop bring audiences who never searched for a language app.
  3. Let fans make the rest. 451,000 videos carry #duolingo, most made by users.
  4. Report it like revenue. Duolingo puts social numbers in its shareholder letters, which keeps the program funded.

How we pulled the numbers

About 9 credits of ScrapeIO calls, the same ones any script or AI agent can make:

curl "https://scrapeio.com/v3/tiktok/profile/videos?handle=duolingo" -H "x-api-key: $SCRAPEIO_API_KEY" # 3 pages

Engagement rate is (likes + comments + shares) / views for each video, and we report the median so one viral post does not skew it. To run the same audit on any brand from Claude Code, Cursor or Codex, install the skills with npx skills add xhoantran/scrapeio-agent and ask for a competitor social audit.
